Final Major Project - Coventry University
Duration: 24 Weeks
Year: 2026
Burnout-reducing focus lamp designed as an ambient Pomodoro timer, using rhythmic light cycles and natural colour temperature to encourage healthy work habits.
The Problem
Desk-based professionals frequently skip breaks, work beyond healthy limits to meet deadlines, and struggle to disconnect after work, while prolonged screen exposure and stress gradually disrupt their natural circadian rhythm.
The Consequences
This results in burnout, poor sleep quality, reduced focus, and declining wellbeing, as people lose healthy boundaries between work and rest, remain mentally “switched on,” and develop unhealthy working habits over time.
Development
Rapid sketching, testing ideas around work behaviour, and iterative CAD development refined the design, focusing on intuitive Pomodoro timing, calming light transitions, and a balanced form that supports healthier working habits.
Development
Six initial concepts were explored and evaluated against user needs, feasibility, clarity, and emotional impact. The hourglass-inspired lamp was selected for its calm symbolism and clear ability to support healthier work rhythms without feeling intrusive.
Testing
Iterative testing refined interaction, ergonomics, scale, and lighting. Prototypes explored the flipping motion and usability, while lighting and electronic tests ensured effective performance and integration.
Flip Interaction
The lamp is manually flipped to begin focus and break sessions. This physical interaction encourages users to pause their work and take meaningful breaks.
Pomodoro Timer
When placed with the charging side down, the lamp runs a 50-minute focus session. When flipped, a 10-minute break session begins, encouraging a balanced work rhythm.
Timer Animation
The LEDs animate to simulate falling sand between chambers, providing a calm and intuitive visual indication of time passing.
Circadian Lighting
The light temperature gradually shifts from cool to warm throughout the day, supporting natural circadian rhythms and reducing visual strain.
Wireless
Wireless charging and an integrated battery allow the lamp to be used away from the base, giving users flexibility to position it wherever needed.
Low Battery Indicator
A front-facing LED illuminates red when the battery is low, providing a subtle visual indication that the lamp requires charging.
Base Controls
The base includes a rotary control to adjust settings, allowing users to toggle power, Pomodoro mode, and circadian lighting.

Materials
Material and process selection focused on achieving a balance between aesthetics, durability, and manufacturability.
Components were designed for injection moulding and die casting, using materials such as polycarbonate and aluminium to ensure a high-quality finish, structural integrity, and efficient large-scale production.
